This post is late because, as I mentioned in my last post, I've been travelling. So it isn't breaking news. GISS LOTI went from 0.60°C in October to 0.77°C in November. This is almost exactly the same as the TempLS rise. But GISS had been more volatile in earlier months.
The November reading attracted interest as being the warmest November on record. And pushback on the basis that, well, uncovered steam pipes in Russia etc. These rationalizations never explain why the steam pipes did not equally affect previous Novembers.
Still, GISS and TempLS agree that Russia was indeed the hot spot. Here is the GISS map for Oct 2013:
And here, with the same scale and color scheme, is the earlier TempLS map:

It looks like the comment box in the '60 stations' blog is under the latter GL graph, at least in Chrome... I'm surprised Hawaiji doesn't have a long rural surface station record. Otherwise the 286 stations (50 year record) option looks to have a quite even spread across earth. On the older record, 88 or 129 stations would be my choice for further analysis.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the warning about the comment space - I've fixed it. Yes, it is surprising about Hawaii - I'll check. What I'm hoping to do now is analyse quite a lot of cases to see how consistent the results are.
DeleteI checked on Hawaii. There are several rural stations with long records, but not extending beyond 2009. The four stations that do qualify there:
DeleteLIHUE, KAUAI
HONOLULU, OAHU
KAHULUI AIRPORT
HILO/GEN. LYM
are all classified Urban.
All of these Hawaii long records are probably in the respective airports. Lihue, Kauai would likely be the smallest town of these, if you're considering accepting one urban station. This would possibly eliminate two California stations if your aim is to get an even spread over the oceans (thinner) and continents (thicker).
ReplyDeleteWell, looking at the traffic amounts in these airports, the Hilo airport sees the least amount of traffic. On the other hand, Hilo itself is a large city. So it'd be an even toss which is 'more rural' of these.
